Speaking as someone who would make a definitive study of one, I was pleased to read that marijuana smoking apparently does very little lung damage:

Via Vulture:

A government study, one of the most extensive examinations ever of the long-term effects of marijuana use, has found that smoking one joint a day for 7 years, or one joint a week for 49 years, does not impair lung function. In fact, “marijuana users performed slightly better on the lung function test” than people who don’t smoke anything. The study did not measure the effects of smoking a joint the size of a zucchini.

I might be able to help out there…

In the age of SSRI’s, people need to be doing a lot more research into the psychiatric benefits of marijuana.

I’ve always joked that I have two sides to my personality - stoned and asshole.

Guess who people like better.

I’m pro legalization, pro hemp, pro cannabis use for medicinal purposes as well as psychoative—but take a closer look at the study—its not very well done IMO. Any smoke damages lung tissue, sorry. The study is a bit skewed

I guess all that hacking, wheezing, and shortness of breath during my pot smoking days was just a coincidence.

Michael Simmons says:

Despite the apparent paradox, in my cannabis club days in the ‘90s I knew asthmatics who smoked pot because it opened up their lung’s passageways.  Dr. Tashkin—as quoted in the Times article—came to similar conclusions even though he originally believed cannabis to be both carcinogenic and harmful to lungs.  He no longer believes either, in fact has some evidence to believe it’s anti-carcinogenic.

42 years of smoking pot and my lungs don’t feel nearly as bad as they did when I smoked cigs for 26 years. Plus weed keeps me from killing asshole drivers on the road. I hear they frown on that

The 7-Up’s most likely much worse for health than the pot. Chronic abusers of sugar-laden soft drinks like 7-Up are statistically more likely to acquire pancreatic cancer, one of the most incurable, deadly cancers around. A friend’s sister may have been one such casualty. She died of pancreatic cancer after years of obesity & chronic sugar-y soft dink abuse. How come our laws surrounding substance use & abuse are all back-asswards? We legally tolerate the most deadly substances of all: tobacco, alcohol, trans-fat laden junk food, maybe even 7-Up, while we hypocritically demonize & criminalize far less deadly substances, including all the dreaded so-called “hard drugs”. There’s no rational sense in this.
