This Egyptian commercial makes its point very clear: don’t fuck with the Panda, buy her cheese!

Buddy Holly. Weird choice, some Egyptian pounds for Macca.

Why is Buddy Holly a weird choice?  Egyptians love American music.

Anyway, this commercial is obviously competing with Laughing Cow which is a very common cheese brand/product in most of the Middle East.

“True Love Ways” by Buddy Holly would be an odd choice for a cheese commercial regardless of the country of origin. Relax, man.

LOL.  Dude, I AM relaxed.  Maybe you are the one who needs to take a chill pill for getting a little defensive over a simple question?  Sorry if I inadvertently made you feel under attack with my curiousity about why you didn’t think the Buddy Holly song worked in this context, man.

I personally think the Buddy Holly song works fine, IMHO. The panda starts off looking lovingly at the dad, and then:  PSYCHE!  It pulls a total dick move and turns over their shopping basket and kicks their groceries, because the father told the boy (in Egyptian colloquial) that they “didn’t need any more cheese because they already were buying a bunch of things.”

It’s funny, because it starts off seeming almost like a love affair the way the panda is looking longingly at the dad, and then the panda turns out to be a total dick, because the dad wouldn’t buy his cheese.  That’s why the song works for me… because it tricks you, it makes it more unexpected, and hence funny, that the panda is actually mean rather than friendly as the song and as the panda’s initial loving glance hints at.

If you knew how prevalent the “Laughing Cow” cheese brand is in the Middle East, then it makes sense that they seem to be trying to compete with that well-established brand via a silly comedic commercial.
