No, it wasn’t composed by Delia. The theme was composed by Ron Grainer and Delia Derbyshire created the electronic realisation of his score.
Grainer loved it and wanted to give a co-composing credit to Delia but this was nixed by BBC.
I think the very first theme is the best and is certainly would have shocked British ears at the time.
The first one is still the best. Amazing considering Delia Derbyshire pretty much used oscilloscopes and a bunch of tape recorders to make it.
Saying it’s early synth music is an understatement. It’s one of the first example or truly electronic music. Nothing that remotely resembles a musical instrument was used to create it, basically electronic shop hardware that made sounds, recorded then lopped and coped and all sorts of other early recording effects. You would record a tone then start editing tape by hand to make it into music.
