Last week, thanks to the efforts of the Internet’s “collective id”—otherwise known as the 4chan BBS—Mary Bale, the evil woman from Coventry, England who was caught on tape mistreating a cat, was brought to justice (or at least a public shaming she is unlikely to ever fully recover from in this lifetime).

Well boys… here’s another job for you: If you think the CC video footage that caused Bale’s epic feline fail was bad, this is ten times worse and it involves an accomplice! That’s right, this footage—which you should not watch if you are easily upset (or a normal human being) because it is THAT BAD—was not captured by a passive CC camera, but by a human being who not only DIDN’T STOP IT FROM HAPPENING, but who thought it would be funny to videotape it and post it on the Internet? Yuck.

Mary Bale currently is under police protection, but if this woman can be identified, she should be taken into police custody. How could someone do something like this to tiny, crying, helpless newborn puppies?!?! As I type this, there is a tiny 5-month-old puppy playing happily beside me who I am madly in love with. It’s hard to conceive of someone doing this kind of thing. This woman who can kill a bunch of puppies so cruelly should be shamed, do some jail time and spend the rest of her sad shitty life with this videotape following her dumb ass around anytime a prospective employer (or boyfriend) would like some more information about her and types her name into a Google search.

Though I can’t make out what she says earlier, at the end she says “vot”—Russian for “there” or “see”, but it could be another Slavic tongue.

Now I’m not defending the act of filming it as anything but stunned as a brick, but this is what farm life is. What do you think happens when your dog has 8 puppies you can’t afford to take care of or find homes for? this is something that happens all the time, and you don’t film it for exactly the same reason you don’t bring a camera into the slaughterhouse, people who haven’t grown up in a farm environment can’t get over this initial emotional response. Is this act heartless? you can argue that the same way you can argue that all of the cattle industry is heartless, is it necessary? unfortunately yes. Have you ever tried to give away a half dozen puppies? do you know how hard that is sometimes? Well over half the animals brought to animal shelters have to be euthanized because no home can be found for them.
One year two of our cats gave birth at the same time and we had 14 kittens, we were able to give away 3 of them and we kept the two that me and my sisters liked the most, but the rest my dad had to put in a sack and lower into the brook. It’s ugly, but this is what happens. I’m not saying this woman isn’t stupid as a bag of rocks for uploading a video of her chucking puppies into the river and apparently giggling at the act. But before you go on some big holy tangent damning her for “horrible inhuman cruelty” you should realize that this fucking farm life and this is shit that has to be done.

Animals Are Not Ours to Abuse in Any Way

I don’t like witch hunts. It gives way to false accusations (like anonymous’ above possibly is) and death threats (like GERARD999 above). This bullying and stalking will only add to the net total of crime and frustration, even if it helped solve the initial crime.

Moreover, do we want people in general so focussed on the individual that they become completely blind for the context? For example, shouldn’t there be enough room in animal asylums; now they are packed? Shouldn’t there be free sterilisations at the veterinarian when it appears that disposing of unwanted puppys is common?

Does this puppy killing needs to be solved? Yes.
Do we need a 4chan vigilante? No.
Do we want to prevent it from happening again? Yes.
But does witchhunting help asylums, animal education and veterinarians? No.

i can’t (and won’t) watch the video. but i do take umbrage with @Puggapugga. i hope her/his comment is fake and just meant to draw ire. if it’s fake, it’s NOT funny. if it’s real, if you can afford an effing sack and rope to drown your kittens in YOU CAN EFFING AFFORD TO HAVE YOUR PETS SPAYED AND NEUTERED (there are free clinics almost everywhere). it’s NOT normal to kill cats and dogs. i don’t give a flying yoo hoo about being called judgmental when i say, there is something quite wrong with someone who mistreats ANY animal much less a domesticated cat or dog.

post some footage of industrial pig farming/abattoir folks from around the world doing their jobs and then call for their harassment by a group of unaccountable anonymous teenagers. make sure its not in america, because we don’t want to muddy the waters with market causation, etc. evil doing by seeming lone actors is much easier to get on your high horse about, after all.

while doing that, try ignoring the wider issues about authorship of the film, intended viewership, dissemination of material on the web etc. that helps.

and try not to leave it too long after the cat-in-the-bin episode (and this one), because then it makes you look more reasonable, perhaps even giving the impression that you reflect a popular groundswell of disgust about animal welfare issues. which of course you talk about all the time.

also, maybe you can persuade boingboing to jump onboard. that’d bring you some caché, and perhaps more clicks for your sponsors. maybe you might even get it on buzzfeed. that’d be AWESOME!

finally, could you find some dubious stats about people being cruel to animals, and the likelihood about them becoming serial killers? if not, then i’m sure your new fans will.

Yes people kill animals all the time, I don’t think that’s the point here. I don’t know these people are “rural”, or even poor. THey have a video camera and computer. They seem to laugh and have a casual, fun attitude throwing puppies into a river. Is somebody going to find them and kill them? I doubt it. BUt people kill people every day too right? It’s not about class, or politics. Don’t read too much into it. These two should be punished. And should probably not have anything to do with puppies or dogs or animals that are kept as pets. They could have raised them and eaten them if they were so poor!
