Gabriella Wingaardh says:

Have been in a hurricane-strength storm on the North Sea, off the coast of Norway. It was just like this.

I took a day cruise to the Bahamas in the 80s that was just like this. Except add splotches of yellow scrambled egg puke all over the walls and floors. Even the crew was getting sick. We ended up turning the ship around and getting a refund.

Reminds me of how tiny we and what we build to protect us are against the elements!

A supposedly fun thing they’ll never do again…

Dondi says:

Oh god, this gets better with every viewing. Due to the fixed camera it looks as if they are being attacked by angry dining room furniture that gets increasingly aggressive with every repeated pass.

Obviously I wouldn’t be laughing if I was on that boat…

mark says:

Not that funny - the crew in the cargo hold could have been killed.

@Mark:

Hm, yes. The key phrase here is ‘could have’ I think. Let’s try not to get too morally indignant about something that didn’t actually happen.

Looks like their stabilizers weren’t working !!!

Gail says:

I thought these folks bolted everything down so this sort of thing wouldn’t happen? And why haven’t the passengers been advised to remain somewhere secure?

Poor planning!

Ken Cook says:

The old expression that someone or thing is a; “loose cannon in a storm” certainly fits here. The Tea Partiers like our Sarah would feel right at home!!

looks like my trip from brindisi italy to corfu, greece. we were the last ship out before they stopped service due to bad weather.

Bill Cookson says:

I wonder what they served for dinner? Surprised the caption dident find a safe location to cruise in ahead of the storm? looks like they all survived and most likely received a free trip at another time. but what stories can be told over and over. the facts might change but the outcome?

I love the guy in the white shirt in back helping the woman with the ponytail. He was kinda heroic. Everyone else was all worried about getting wiped out by furniture, but he was more concerned with keeping her safe.

Patrick says:

It looks like the Propane tank on the fork lift springs a leak, plus I’m wondering if the liquids on the cargo deck are cleaning fluids or other potentially flammable liquids.

I’m surprised that they don’t have some way of locking those things down, but I guess this happens so seldom that it’s not worth it (or they just get out of the habit of locking ‘em down).

Caryn says:

I was in a hurricane on a ship sailing out of a port in Alaska. Seas were 42ft waves an the wind was 76 mph. I was lucky because the ship was headed into the waves rather than side to side as in this video. When the ship hit the bottom of a wave it felt like we had hit the ocean floor. This went on for about 7 hours with a lot of sick guests and even some of the crew. No damage but a lot of alcohol served when the seas calmed down.

I hope the liner comp. got sued! No excuse for loose items on a ship of any kind. That was inexcusable and dangerous. Take another look, That crew member was using the woman to cover his ass.

but then that woman sincerely helps another woman…...

btrim@hotmail.com says:

Not her job. The crew member.is supposed to take all RESPONSIBILITY,For the safety, of the guests.
Still doesn’t explain, the unsecured items.(ALL over the ship.), nor the reason, for the skipper to be blindsided by a wave, that was big enough to be seen on a scanner and the man at the Helm, NOT BE notified so he could turn into the wave?

POOR SEAMANSHIP and total non-understanding of his roll in peoples lives.

He wasn’t ready for his job.

  Should have been a galley-slave

The second portion of the video showed the forklift
being slid to the wall and then slid back and put on its side. Luckily its a electric forklift (NOT PROPANE)so the only danger would be from the leakage from the cell. Some cannot leak as they have tubes in them so that can be all filled thru a single tube. But in any event the mere movement of the forklift is very dangerous as its VERY HEAVY!!!

surely the tables and other heavy items on cruise ships are nailed down…? or clipped in?

Garth says:

Behold the power of the sea!  Behold the idiocy of the captain who held the ship in the trough taking waves broadside.  Behold the reason that everything should be secured on a ship - 23 foot waves don’t just appear out of nowhere!  There is no way the captain couldn’t have known this was coming!!  This video shows only 2 places onboard a 1000’+ ship - I would imagine that this calamity was happening everywhere onboard. It appears that the crew had little to no training on how to prepare for the situation or how to react in the situation.  Makes you wonder how effecient (or detrimental) an order to abandon ship would be!! (imagine the Titanic in these seas!)
