In a similar vein, American food shop The Real McCoy was the only place in Paris where I could find a Red Bull (proud product of Austria!) http://www.angloinfo.com/showcase/realmccoy/default.asp

I’ve always thought it was kind of sad that there really aren’t any American foods that we all agree are American foods. I used to get jealous of my English friends when they’d all talk so fondly of Digestives, crisps, butties… or my German friends and their Kindereggs and Gnutella.
I’ve lived in California half my life and the other half in Tennessee. Really, our regional eats are far more like what I’ve seen with people from other countries when they visit America.
When I’m in Cali, I miss shredded pork BBQ, okra, country ham… And no one understands my fondness for RC and Moonpies (although, in East Tennessee, they’re a mainstay).
When I’m in Tennessee, I miss It’s-It, fruity teas, fresh-baked sourdough, *real* pizza, fresh fruits from the farmer’s markets… and oddly enough… the accessibility of so many foods from around the world (I defy you to find pho, or samosa, or Pocky Sticks, or Spam musubi in TN).
The sad thing about all the stuff shown on the USA aisle, is that… although most definitely America, there is no emotion tied to it for most Americans. You’d be hard pressed to find someone pining for Hershey’s syrup while on holiday.

Andy,
I think you’re right about what you said about this not having any emotional meaning for Americans.
But I think you’re wrong about finding ethnic food in Eastern TN. I guess I don’t know where you live, exactly, but there’s definitely a vietnamese restaurant in Knoxville. If you’re in Johnson City, you might have to drive to western nc for Pho. I only say this because it is a major priority in my life, and I think no one should go unaware of nearby pho possibilities. There are also indian restaurants in Johnson City and Knoxville that might have samosa. Also, sometimes they stock pocky in rural grocery stores, and you could definitely get it at any asian grocery—not sure where one would be in eastern TN. If you just go to nashville or western nc you can get whatever you want though.

Nice concept about The American “Ethnic” Food Aisle. But do not know more about this food. I want to know more about this food. I hope found all details in next. Thanks a lot!
