Metzger on Michael Moore’s Capitalism: A Love Story

image

Tara and I watched Michael Moore’s Capitalism: A Love Story this weekend (it’s on the Netflix VOD currently) and I absolutely loved it. It’s a truly great film, one that I have no doubt will be looked at and revered by future generations trying to understand what the hell happened in our backwards era. I recommend it to everyone who reads this blog and cares about my opinion. It was absolutely spellbinding to me. I felt as if I wanted to cheer several times to see someone say these things and say them so powerfully. Capitalism: A Love Story, or a film just like it, needed to be made. but there is only one guy who could have pulled off something like this, gotten it funded, herded through the distribution system and gotten a message this radical the deep penetration in the culture that it deserves, and it’s Michael Moore.

Surprisingly, Capitalism: A Love Story is perhaps the least polemic of all of Moore’s films, even if it does, at root, articulately advocate the necessity of class warfare, at least at the ballot box.  Most of what Moore, or his protagonists, have to say in the film would be damed difficult to refute, perhaps this is why it doesn’t seem as confrontational as Moore’s films often are. You’d have to have a very closed mind to deny the reality of what you see on display here. Even Sean Hannity would have a hard time arguing with any of it (although I doubt he watched or will ever watch Moore’s film)

To say what Michael Moore says in Capitalism: A Love Story took balls and it also took amazing skill as a storyteller, underscoring his Mark Twain-like role in American society. After a mind-numbing section where the audience is introduced to the concept of the so-called “Dead Peasant” life insurance policies some major companies take out on their non-essential employees—unbeknownst to them—where they make more money if the employee dies, he cuts to an interview with Father Dick Preston, the Flint, Michigan-based priest who married Moore and his wife Kathleen Glynn (who interviewed me for a job once, she’s super cool).

He quietly asks the priest if capitalism is evil and what Jesus would think about free enterprise and his answer is devastating. This isn’t some left-wing loony he had to search out, this is the man who married him, the local priest who, like Moore, has witnessed the tragedy and destruction the loss of the auto industry in Flint, Michigan did to their hometown. Both of these men knows what greed does and how and who it harmed. People with first and last names.

And let me tell you, this priest fucking nails it. It’s a powerful, powerful cinematic moment.

Speaking as someone who took ten people on my own 24th birthday to see Roger and Me when it was in theaters—I also released This Divided State on DVD when I was at Disinformation—maybe I’m biased, but do yourself a favor and see this film. Better still, if you watch it and you like it, consider having a screening party at your house and invite 5 or 6 friends over to watch it and discuss it afterwards. It takes two hours to watch and could open the eyes of even a devout redneck Fox News watcher (well, some redneck Fox News watchers) to what’s really going on in this country. It’s not like Glenn Beck is ever going to tell them.

Below is one of the most powerful moments in a film full of them: rare footage taken right after FDR’s final State of the Union address where he lays out the concept of a Second Bill of Rights that would have guaranteed that all Americans have “a useful job, a decent home, adequate health care, and a good education.”

God bless Michael Moore. He’s a great American.

OK.  I added it to my queue.  I don’t tend to be impressed by Moore.  Too emotional.  Maybe that’s why he makes films?  Maybe that’s why he’s fat?  Whatever.

I wanted to like Sicko more than I did.  I will probably feel the same way about this film.

That being said, maybe the time is right?  I will take a look.

I respect Michael Moore’s work but only as agitprop. He says things that ought to be said, to the people they ought to be said to, but I feel he is too much of a showman in setting up contrived situations that are often attacks on straw men (cf. his taunting of a senile, Depends-wearing Charlton Heston). He also plays just as fast and loose with the facts as a FOX news man when it suits him to.

It’s good and necessary theatre, but that’s it - I would not call him a documentary filmmaker.

I agree with you.  I am always hesitant to watch a Moore film.  I wait for endless months before finally caving in and watching the DVD.  And then I’m blown away by how great this guy really is.  People these days don’t tend to like people who speak with huge dramatic effect.  They assume that a dramatic speaker is full of shit.

But I think Moore is very real.

yes it was astonishing to see Moore finally get to the root cause of all our societal ills: capitalism…more power to Micheal Moore…hopefully his next doc will be on Mr Assange! )

The sad truth of it is, while this movie communicates some things very well, it also fails miserably in many areas. Moore’s classic, and IMO most annoying crutch, is his tendency to lean on emotionally charged bullshit to get his point across and boost the drama of his films. In this case, that means we watch a variety of people who are upset that they are being kicked out of their homes. Now, the recent housing crisis is a complicated issue, but at its core it is the simple result of a policy to increase home ownership put in place during the W administration, which ultimately meant that people who would not normally qualify for mortgages were now being approved for them. In other words, the system that was in place and designed to evaluate whether people would be able to realistically afford the houses they were buying, was circumvented in order to help boost a feel good stat of % of Americans who were actually living the so called American Dream of owning their house.  It was born to fail, and it blows my mind that no one saw it coming. Now, this is not to say the blame should lie on the people who signed those mortgages (although some of it should) but Moore never bothers to give any backstory or context to this, instead simply showing us how much is sucks to be kicked out of your house and how banks are bad people for doing so. Other things that suck include:
- Not committing to understanding how the payments on your mortgage work before you sign them, finding out the interest rate skyrockets later.
- Being a big enough fool to ‘unlock the equity in your home’ without learning what that means or reading the fine print.
- Having a thesis as impossible and silly as “Capitalism is bad and must go” without proposing an idea that makes this possible.

Another thing that threw me off was that he spends a portion of the movie discussing the evil of capitalism with Priests. What the fuck? Again, he is playing right into the emotional weakness of so many poor bastards that believe there is a magic wizard named Jesus who will be of some assistance to them at some point, rather than dispensing useful information or perhaps even making suggestions.

Oh Yeah, another thing, surprise surprise, Wal Mart does not give a shit about their employees.  In fact, I have a feeling that part of how they are able to offer those super low prices is that they are cunts who fuck people over along the way. I’m not sure if people simply do not know this already, but my guess is that either way they won’t actually give a fuck and will continue to vote with their dollars.

Anyway, I actually liked a whole lot about this movie, and I suppose this is why I was so disappointed in the aspects in which I thought it fell flat. Yes, I agree that the greed and general lack of accountability that corporatism can foster is bad, but this has also been covered in a more thorough film years ago called The Corporation, which does not waste my time with people who get screwed over in the capitalist system mainly because they did not read the fine print or made foolish assumptions. In summary, yes Michael, sometimes in a capitalist system bad things happen, but sometimes Priests rape children so I am not so sure they have all the answers either.

Thank you, Richard, for giving this film a much needed and deserved endorsement.
While it is far from the perfect film on the subject, it’s probably the best that could be made given the constraints of the system. I too was surprised that such a radical documentary was able to be made within the mainstream film establishment, but was not surprised by the relative silence and indifference from most corporate media upon its release. I suspect even many progressives brushed it off either because they dislike Moore’s personality or are too intellectual and cynical for the populist approach of his films. In any case, Moore’s heart is clearly in the right place, and he is trying to reach out to people across the political and class spectrum. While it may seem unlikely that he will find an audience with the teabagger crowd, if by chance they find this film (perhaps by accident?) they just might start getting angry at the people and institutions at the heart of national and global injustices.

I’ve always had a dislike for Michael Moore from some of his actions in the 90’s, when I was much more right leaning than I am now.  This film really changed my view of him.  Maybe we’ve both matured?

Not a great “film” but has many great things to say and something that everyone should see.
