From what I can gather, these beautifully odd clips are from the early 70s Soviet era Georgian film Mziuri which appears to be some sort of showcase for electric folk tunes performed soley by pre-teen girls. On a cruise ship. Can a Georgian DM reader perhaps tell me more about what’s going on here? I love the overdriven sound especially. Toasty good !

Interesting, but man you gotta check out this breakbeat-heavy clip of Belorussian group Pesnari (“the Folksingers”) performing on Soviet TV.  I became obsessed with this clip a couple years ago after I found one of their later LPs in a thrift shop.

reposting this helpful info from one of our facebook pages:

actually they were—“children ensemble Mziuri”
and film is an usual mushroom-psycho-soviet comedy about world champion sportsman, who must take “young Pioneers” to Artec, kind of Pioneers disneyland:]] ,
he thinks pioneers are also sportsmen, but instead he gets girl band etc.

most interesting thing is that band was very popular in ussr. they had many concerts in different cities. :]]

probably you don’t know, how popular was “mukhamor”-mushrooms, middle asian cannabis and cheap vodka between the “thiefs in law”[anticommunist organised criminals] and underground art-fields.

so we have a nice cultural consequences :]]

the first song is adaptation of old, most weird Guruli [west georgian] folk song.
they sing in many voices, like this:

and also some of them performed their stuff in wild west :]]

the second song you post is in Russian, it’s about cartoon character “Karlson”, weird guy with a propeller who lives on the roof:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdPw8dZx9I0

the third is in Russian too:
“this song is a Miracle
and i sing it for everyone” :]]

the fourth is a rehearsal as you c :]]]

hope i help a little :] if so,
glad to be usefull anytime.
