An interview with Nicholas Schou, author of Orange Sunshine: The Brotherhood of Eternal Love and Its Quest to Spread Peace, Love, and Acid to the World. The inside story of the infamous gang of dope-dealing surfers who played a key role in the counterculture of the Sixties. It’s a mindblowing—and improbable—tale of drug smuggling, large scale marihuana farming and LSD distribution—basically, it’s the hidden history of how America got turned on. The story of the Brotherhood might’ve gone to the grave with the participants if not for Nicholas Schou’s intriguing history. Highly recommended.
this is outstanding Metzger!! a really exciting interview….

Thanks for posting the interview. We started a branch of the church in Miami in 1966/67. Art Kleps was Chief Boo Hoo. Initially good people and vibe that quickly went bad.
I put the book on hold at my library.

Nice interview - very interesting! So all that anti-hippy paranoia was grounded in reality.
I was wondering though - why are there music videos up on the DM Vimeo channel??

wow, thanks Richard, that was very enlightening.
Being a long time Hendrix freak that filled in some of the blanks about “Rainbow Bridge”.
In 1988 while living in Oakland Ca. a member of the brotherhood visited our house and invited one of my housemates to come to Hawaii and get in on the grow scene which was quite exclusive at the time. My friend moved there and stayed for 15 years. One of his neighbors was Terrence McKenna.

I’ve been fascinated by The Brotherhood of Eternal Love since hearing about them as a teenager in the mid 70s. One time while scrounging at the Strand Bookstore in NYC I found a book by Stewart Tendler and Davaid May about the Brotherhood. It was a fascinating read. Can’t wait to read this one. I’ve also heard there is a documentary called Orange Sunshine. Certainly would not want this story to be lost. Thanks so much for posting this interview, Dangerous Minds is a fantastic source of eclectic information. Love it!

I bought the book last night at book star in studio city, blew through the first 180 pages. It ranks up there with “Strange Angel” by George Pendle for behind the scenes of little known but major figures in California history.

You can see a little of their influence in the later “Beach Party” movies as some of the more fringe surfer/beatniks morphed into hippies.
I’ve read about these guys for years in various non-fiction about counter-culture—always wanted to know more.
