Patti Smith plays dress-up for a pirate-inspired photo shoot by Annie Liebovitz in the London studio where the latest Johnny Depp pirate movie is being filmed for Disney. The shoot took place last September.
In the video, Patti makes the connection between rock and rollers and pirates and manages to look like both.
Oh shit. Patti Smith and Disney are a “natural marriage”?
Is there a *single* soul out there that can resist selling out?

Marc Campbell says:
Patti has a sense of humor. That’s why she’s still alive.

Marc Campbell says:
Eustace,
keep in mind Patti is a widow two kids to raise and her albums aren’t million sellers.
I think she’s maintained her integrity.“Free Money” has yet to end up in a Bank Of America commercial.

Eustace says:
Marc, I can understand that argument, really, I can, but even if her albums don’t generate huge sales, she has a massive fan base. Am I all wrong about this or could she maintain her dignity without selling herself to Disney by touring, even if it’s only Summer tours? She could probably coast along comfortably by pressing and selling her own bootlegs, rather than allowing someone else to scoop her on that. I can think of dozens of ways that she could make a nice living without being co-opted by a corporation as odious as Disney.

Arthur F. says:
why not…
Photoshoots like this aren’t money-makers, it’s calculated for non-Hollywood Stars as a great publicity gig only, so hardly about support gig.
In the beginning of her career, she introduced a NYC figure, her portrait by Mapplethorpe drawing on androgyny and fashioning a precise uniform inhabited with the spirit of Brian Jones-era Stones among others. The argument of understanding her “support-need” already was there when she went with the one commercial hit due to slavishly following a M.O.R.ish Bruce Springsteen ‘collab’ song. Now she’s photographed by long uncool, corporate-portraitist Leibowiz, basically aping what Keith Richards made clear playing Depp’s father some YEARS ago. Circles..

RJ says:
I love Patti Smith but this is lame. Friggin’ Disney? Her two children are grown-up and she’s not hurting for money. This is about as far from being a pirate as one could imagine.

a couple of things here to you people who are judging this artist.
she is a good friend of liebovitz, who is in financial jeapordy. and yet it seems to me you don’t have to be serious all the time because you are an artist…sometimes you can just do something fun for funs sake..and maybe being a pirate is something she has always imagined and here she gets a photo shoot being one…fun. and for gods sake, dissing springsteen(did you check the year they did that?) so no art can come of anything commercial?
