‘Squirrel Mommy’: A twisted trip into motherly love

There must be some kind of new drug in the water system of Boise, Idaho based on the ultra-bizarre output of American Films (aka Collapse). This Boise-based collective of film makers and actors create wildly twisted short films that are as well-crafted as they are demented, deranged and diabolically funny. Some are transgressive for transgression’s sake, while others dissect the political and social cancers growing through the collective body of the good ol’ U.S.A. with the surgical precision of a pickaxe.

In Squirrel Mommy , the American Films group take on baby envy and the environment. They describe the film as playing on…

[...] the hypocrisy in so many who think they are making huge environmental strides by putting bottles in recycling bins, yet don’t question for a moment the impacts of bringing a child into the mix , which actually negates other efforts while in the bigger picture painfully questions their “I’m so green” status.

Conveniently we forget, and certainly don’t want to admit, that it’s overpopulation that’s the real culprit behind planetary destruction. Global warming and peak oil would both be much less non-factors if it weren’t for overpopulation which in part is encouraged by the child bearing attitude and addiction which poor jealous Neena portrays as she reveals the lengths she will go to fill this ingrained desire.

Whether you buy their highfalutin’ rap or not, there’s no denying that Squirrel Mommy is weird in the extreme, beautifully shot with nifty special effects and a dark sense of humor that echoes the absurdist sensibilities of John Waters and David Lynch. And I found it actually kind of heartwarming.

Starring Kelly Broich as a woman named Neena who becomes overwhelmed with a fit of jealousy over her best friends news, delivered in stereotypical fashion by actor Casey Broich, “I’m pregnant!”

American Films has been booted from Youtube once already and their new channel has gotten some warnings, so watch this while you can.

“Collapse” is bizarre? How so?

The world may not be “overpopulated” in the respect that if capitalism and the petroleum/military industrial complex actually gave two shits about anything other than their own constantly escalating self interests there might be a way to support seven billion people equitably.

Unfortunately going into a voting booth and pressing a button that says “Barack Obama”, or “Mitt Romney”, “Ron Paul” is not going to
make things suddenly better. Its not going to change the fact that in just over a decade the world population increased by 1 BILLION people.

Oil reserves have not increased accordingly. The EROEI of “alternative fuel sources has not increased accordingly.  Nor has any amount of awareness regarding what these factors mean to
our industrial capitalist empire increased accordingly.

Sure, have a kid. Let them fight a resource war disguised as a battle against an evil boogeyman who just so happens to coincidentally reside in a part of the globe that has some of the last remaining high energy return petroleum resources.

Or maybe your precious offspring can help make things better better by learning how to point out cool rock videos and poke derision at bizarre conspiracy theories.

I think this satire brilliantly exposes the extreme biological desire to reproduce and how we might fucking want to start having the conversation that maybe we need to get over our own ape desires to reproduce before we kill ourselves. We have the conciousness to evovle. Let’s start wearing more condoms at the very least, eh? Or maybe we start to think about how many cute, precious babies we have. We have no real predator to keep us in check. This thing will ‘COLLAPSE’ if we continue to blindly HUMP.

Where do I begin? A bearded woman having sex with a giant squirrel might be a good start.

I certainly don’t mean “bizarre” in a derogatory way. I think the film makers’ aim is to be bizarre. Look at their other films.

Women in the poorest sections of Africa average 7.5 children in their lifetime.  But WE, the people in the United States, with one of the highest standards of living in the world, should stop having children?  Another brilliant idea brought to you by The Left.  Of course,  they would never consider telling women in Africa or India to start using birth control because that would be racist.

It’s like these leftists are self-destructive and they don’t even see it.  Disband the US military, stop having children,  and go around the world begging everyone for forgiveness for having the audacity for thinking freedom and democracy was a good thing.
They think,  if the Iraqi people didn’t like Saddam Hussien,  they’d have voted him out of office.  Or at least there would have been protests in the streets of Baghdad calling for him to step down,  right?
Who knows?  Maybe the people of North Korea take comfort in the fact that their children will not have a better life than they did.  No saving for college, no being in a rock band and driving cross country in a van playing gigs.  No iPads or cell phones to worry about.  They get to serve in the military.  Or, if they don’t want to, they go to a re-education camp and then serve in the military.  Who are we to think the people of North Korea would like to have the same standard of living as the people in South Korea?  We never see them on TV complaining about their Leader.  They must like living the way they do. Right?

What is the inference here - a skit about overpopulation involving two guys playing the part of over rought over emotional women. - Overpopulation: that’s women’s issues don’t you know., after all it is their fault.
There was a TV show in the UK called the Black and white minstrel show, that had the cast blacking up in a grotesque caricature, because, ‘well them minstrels were black weren’t they’. That is what I see here, the big rubber lips of the Black and white minstrel show.
Overpopulation is a serious issue for sure - and it is comforting to know that you men have it all sorted, and us ’breeders’ are all to blame, that is when we lift our heads from the shopping channel long enough to squeal out delight at baby booties and all that women’s stuff.
I don’t know, I getting old now - why does everything have to be reduced to a mocking cruelty. Maybe , Jeremy Clarkson as guest writer for DM beckons……

@MozartFX
(I’ll just assume your numbers are correct)

I would tell those women not to have children, or at least so many children. And I’d wager a lot of those women (and men) would happily have less children.

As to your point about standard of living, I’d also wager/assume that our 2 children per family has a larger environmental impact than those 7.5.

I coultn’t be bothered to read the rest your comment, but I’ll also wager you’re wrong w/ whatever you typed there, too.

Satire is a powerful weapon. Mocking works. What else are we left with? Debate doesn’t work. Education doesn’t seem to work. Preaching doesn’t work. You need to embarass and schock people to wake them up. Satire has always been a powerful weapon to fight societal ills.  I think the piece is directed at American women and their desire to have a BBBAAAAAABY at all planetary costs. As some one pointed out above, and I think Mother Jones did an article, one American child equals three hundred Indian children. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satire

I thought I was rather clear that I am not as impressed with the sociological take of this film as I am it’s over-the-top humor and execution. This makes me laugh. I’m pleased it also makes some people think. Win, win.
