The Ladybirds (also Ladybyrds) hailed from New Jersey in the mid-1960’s and were notorious for performing topless. Their nude shows got them into trouble in Jersey so they moved west and started gigging in Las Vegas and Hollywood’s infamous Blue Bunny Club. They got some international exposure (pun intended) when they appeared in the movie The Wild, Wild World Of Jayne Mansfield.

While they made their rep by being “the world’s first and only all-girl topless band”, they were actually decent (or indecent) musicians. They could play!

Have never heard of these ladies, but the concept is a bit baffling.  Compensation for lack of talent just to get an audience?  Not sure.

I wonder if anyone has an interview with these ladies, and asked why they were topless?  I can imagine quite a number of reasons.  Perhaps Playboy or Penthouse did an article?

But yes, not a bad sound…

The March 1968 issue of “True Adventures” magazine identifies the group members as “Lisa Lynn, 23 years old; Marcelle Mitchell, 24; Rosita Quintana [the drummer], 23; Robin Sherwood, 24; and Barbara Branch [the blonde], 22.”  Around that time, they supposedly had a long-term gig at the Colony Club in Dallas.  If you’re old enough, you’ll remember that Lady Bird Johnson led a campaign to “Beautify America”...

Sorry, I meant to say April 1968, not March, FWIW…

The videos have been pulled by Google, the first for “obscenity” and the second for copyright infringement.

Way to go, Google.
