My second post today about something from 1975 is a nice little audio documentary (wedded with just OK visuals, but it works fine) about a song that I’ve always been very intrigued with. I love that it’s both a rigorous formal experiment and a tremendously succesful pop tune, to say nothing of its dark and deeply melancholic atmosphere. It’s easily one of the best radio hits of the 70’s and I can’t imagine ever tiring of it.

Who is pushing these kinds of boundaries today, on this sort of level?

When I was younger I thought this was done by Paul McCartney. He was quite productive in the 1970s.

My love for this tune knows no bounds.
It freaked me out in ‘75 and It still does today.

I could easily listen to it another 3,000,000 times.  It remains a beguiling gem.  It was a bit of a totem for me at the time of its release, as much for its dour melancholy as its breathtaking, off kilter beauty.  It instantly returns me to that time when I hear it now.

the cool thing about this is, yes, it’s the narrative of the rock star but it could just as well be any girl telling any boy sayonara…

This is a BBC Radio documentary. There are so many cool documentaries like this on BBC radio which deconstruct classic music tracks.  I feel privileged to live in the UK, as I understand a lot of them can’t be streamed outside the Kingdom.

The bands histories are equally amazing

10cc wrote this cos they were always being told they never did any love songs. They decided to prove they could produce an epic slow jam.

It’s a shame that hip hop has such great production values these days, but pop music and rock no longer go for that treatment. The work of a guy like Rich Harrison (Beyonce, Amerie) is pure genius, but you wouldn’t see his work on a Kings of Leon album. Rock ‘n’ Roll used to be so avant garde, not least of all due to the work of men like Trevor Horn and Eric Stewart.

I agree with your article information and moreover its a great album to hear the songs and thanks for the album makers too and sharing the thoughts..
