Silent Star Wars

Over the past few years there have been a number of fanboys who have attempted to reconstruct Star Wars as a silent film. They convert the film to black and white, speed it up and add an old-fashioned piano score. But the ones I’ve seen have failed miserably to authentically replicate the actual look of a real silent movie…until now. This new one succeeds marvelously. It looks like something unearthed from the 1920’s - a really shitty print of a Metropolis outtake. Mark Hamill’s melodramatic facial expressions, his broad gestures and the heightened shadowing of his eyes resemble that of so many actors of the silent era.

I’m not a Star Wars fan, but this I like.

Hot damn!  I’m a big fan of both Star Wars and silent-era movies, and that was just gorgeous.

Superb- craps, was a nice touch, but I was absorbed already, very powerful almost better than the original, artistically, whatever that means.

Too bad he didn’t do that with the four “Star Wars” movies that suck, and make them entertaining. “Empire Strikes Back” is one of the two that doesn’t need any help.

This was very well done.  For those who don’t know, the “sped up” look of older silent films is basically due to the lower frame rates used in the day.  They were shot to be projected at around 16-18 frames per second, but modern projectors start at 24 frames a second.  So, basically, the sped up look is do to improper transfers to home video.

Once in a while you’ll see them projected right, and it still looks weird as all of us are so used to 24 frames per second now.

Would you spend 70 minutes watching a movie review?  I said “never” but after watching this
review of Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, I have to admit it was good enough I’d have watched another 70 minutes.

I noticed that also…

It’s fun, but it still doesn’t recreate silent films that well, and it’s impossible to do so with existing Star Wars footage. There are just too many shot variations, something that didn’t exist in the silent era.

I’ve always wanted to see a 1920s version of Star Wars—but with Fatboy Slim’s “I Could Never Be Your Woman” as the musical soundtrack.  I may be the only one, though…
