Advice goddess Amy Alkon is one lady you do not want to mess with. Hear tales of her revenge against telemarketing companies, cell phone abusers, permissive parents and the thief who stole her pink car! (Who steals a pink car?) Her new book is I See Rude People: One woman’s battle to beat some manners into impolite society.

William Lee says:

Opinionated, self-centered, ego-maniacal princess… A. She needs to move out of Santa Monica / LA / Southern California. B. Has she tried living in one of her “tribal” small towns? I don’t think she’d like that either. C. Has she ever had any children of her own?

“Advice Goddess” indeed. She sounds like she must have a miserable life. It will be either heart disease or cancer that ends it, probably soon. All I heard in this interview was gripe, gripe, gripe.

She does nobody a service by offering her shallow opinions on how she thinks society “should be.” Perhaps she needs to learn make peace with the society as it is (and herself). I wish her the best of luck.

PS. What makes her mind a dangerous one? Absolutely nothing. Utterly inane, uninspired, insipid, and unoriginal.

She is right on.

I’d say she’s a Dangerous Mind, due to William Lee’s reaction to obviously not being able to comprehend the interaction in the video. His digression into Amy’s death shows Williams inability to form an opinion.

William Lee says:

Someone has a dangerous mind due to my observations? Awesome! :D

You honestly didn’t find her classic (unoriginal, un-empathetic) bewailing of “the decline of polite society” tiresome, petulant & immature? Get off my lawn!

Well she obviously has a very high opinion of herself. I suppose that should count for something. Although I am sure I’m not the only one who finds her reactionary prejudices revolting, and her techniques entirely tactless as well, not that it actually matters.

I would really love to see Amy write or do a “fish out of water” documentary about modern societies that have a combination of high population densities and compressed personal space. Places like Japan and China.

The Japanese practice a sort of selective hearing with regards to their paper sliding doors or thin ceilings and walls between tiny closet-sized homes.

The mainland Chinese, specifically the urbanites, develop a psychic thick-skin and I’m told it is quite the culture-shock if you are used to even the least bit of politeness or decorum. Not saying that they are rude 100% of the time, just that outside of limited circumstances where politeness is expected, every other arena is a free-for-all.

An anecdote I had from a friend working in China was about an old-fashioned ice vendor. A old guy who rode around with a cinder-block of ice on his bicycle, hacking off what you need for the day or week. He would knock on your door, walk straight in, hack off some ice, place it in your fridge and then demand payment for his service. You had to be fast and firm as soon as he arrived. Your socially accepted window of opportunity to refuse was BEFORE he crossed the threshold. Otherwise you ended up in a heated exchange fit to make a sailor blush. In his reality, because you did nothing to stop him, you agreed to the transaction. Most people I know would have a fit if that happened.

Unfortunately nothing is ruder than pointing out the rudeness of others, as calling someone rude is by its nature an insult, and is thus rude by definition.

Who shouts into their cell phone? The speaker is usually right next to your ear. It’s much more fun to shout at the person standing in front you.

How fortunate she made sure we knew South Central was (you know, a bad part of L.A.)  And how thoughtful to call the Ralph’s she was at “ghetto Ralph’s” because of someone on their cell phone.
Empathy indeed.

William Lee clearly has no idea how to present an effective argument as he’s doing precisely what he’s complaining about (you know…griping), and then following it up with a vindictive and completely pointless comment on how he’d like her to die.

Granted, I wouldn’t approach situations the way she does, but I certainly have an equal dislike of rudeness and don’t think embodying it in the way William Lee does is ever appropriate - because really, who makes jokes about cancer & heart disease.  You’re completely classless and tactless, and I hope somebody like her sticks it to you one day.

She is so rude herself!  I have read her blog and found her to be rude, nasty and judgmental.  She is as bad as any bigoted, religious fundamental only without the “god” part.  There is only 1 right in the world - HER right.  If you don’t agree with her on any point she will call you an idiot who can’t see reason.  And by “reason” she means “her point of view”.  She is rude, condescending, self righteous and a total snot.  If that is what she was like back in grade school, it’s no wonder nobody liked her.
