If ever there was a need for a trained actor, or to fill the bill for a really unusual role in 1970s porn, they’d usually call Jamie Gillis. You might say he was the Harvey Keitel of porno. Gillis died on Friday. From the obituary:
Adult film industry legend Jamie Gillis succumbed to a battle with cancer and died in New York City on February 19, 2010. He was 66.
“Jamie was a magnificent spirit,” said author Larry “Ratso” Sloman, a close friend. “He was a kind, gentle, compassionate soul with an insatiable thirst for experience – equally at home at the opera, the OTB parlor, an elegant restaurant, a hockey game or Plato’s Retreat. He was a Renaissance Jew.”
His live-in partner of seven years, the Manhattan restaurateur Zarela Martinez, was quickly able to separate the man from the myth, the person from the persona. “After my initial reservations about being involved with a notorious porn star, I got to know a cultured man of great depth and warmth.”
Another friend, Ashley Spicer, who was working with Jamie and others on a documentary about the birth of the New York adult film industry, noted, “While he became known for the darker roles he sometimes played, off-screen Jamie was a sensitive and loyal friend. He was a unique, irreplaceable person.”
Born Jamey Ira Gurman on April 20, 1943 in New York, Jamie Gillis was one of the adult film’s first genuine stars and one of the genre’s most recognizable, charismatic, and influential figures.
After graduating with honors from Columbia University in 1970, he became an aspiring theater actor and mime artist supporting himself by working part time as a taxi driver.
In 1971, he answered an advertisement in the Village Voice for a nude model; this lead to work performing in short films known as loops and subsequently in the first wave of explicit adult feature films.
He quickly established himself as the leading male performer and best actor in East Coast adult films during porn’s golden age, which lasted from 1972 to 1983. During this era, porn was shot on film, had reasonable production values, genuine story lines and aspirations to mainstream acceptance. Gillis starred in all the major productions at this time, including “The Private Afternoons of Pamela Mann” (1974), “The Story of Joanna” (1975), “The Opening of Misty Beethoven” (1976), “Through the Looking Glass” (1976), “The Ecstasy Girls” (1979), “Amanda By Night” (1981), “Roommates” (1981), and many others. He was also an occasional performer in live sex shows in Times Square, where he recited Shakespeare soliloquies on stage ostensibly to give the shows a “socially redeeming purpose” and thus avoid obscenity charges.
In the 1980s when porn production moved to California where it was predominantly shot on video, Gillis relocated to the West Coast where his prolific acting career continued. He also appeared in a number of roles in mainstream films, including “Nighthawks” (1982) which starred Sylvester Stallone. In 1989, he turned director / performer, creating the series “On the Prowl” which initiated the “gonzo” style of porn videos – a genre which returned to the raw aesthetic of the loops he had made at the beginning of his career.
He continued to work in the adult film business until the early 2000s, increasingly appearing in non-sexual roles before announcing his retirement at the end of 2007 as a Christmas present for his partner Zarela. It is estimated that he appeared in over 500 feature films and loops over the course of his four-decade career.
A ubiquitous participant in New York’s sexual subculture of the 1970s, he appeared more recently in documentaries paying tribute to Plato’s Retreat (“American Swing”) and fellow adult performer Jack Wrangler (“Wrangler, Anatomy of an Idol”).
He is survived by his partner Zarela Martinez, three sisters (Phyllis Conley, Diane Lane, and Judy Caiati), two brothers (Wayne and Allan Gurman), and a daughter, Debbie Gurman.
Gillis will be cremated at a private ceremony. He requested that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the NYC Police Athletic League, an organization that assisted him as a boy and continues to aid New York City children. Donations can be made here.

Honestly he might have been a nice guy off screen but I really don’t like seeing him on screen. His performances were so misogynistic so violent towards women, violence is not part of my fantasy life.

Violence is part of my fantasy life, and sometimes part of my real sex life. There is quite a difference between intimate and consensual violence and eg. the horrible violence that sometimes occurs between strangers in the street - football hooligans, thugs etc. Mr Gillis was a one-off human who managed to offend both left and right, whose life’s work was a truly bizarre and single-minded pursuit of libertinage. RIP and hope yr ass-fuckin’ and politically stirrin’ beyond the grave sir.

Forget about Jamie Gillis for a moment; this back ‘n’ forth exposes one of the many lame aspects of the Interyenta. Will expressed an opinion and that’s fine, but Joey Name’s comment is why comments sections are bothersome. Joey Name says “stop it.” Does that mean anything Joey Name objects to ought to be stricken because he says so? Is this Dangerous Minds, edited by Joey Name, approved of by Joey Name, subject to Joey Name’s whims? While we’re on the subject, who is Joey Name?
Comments sections have become a Rorschach Test. People with bullying personalities tend to out themselves. There are ways to express disagreement and displeasure and then there are ways to show one has no command of language.
By the way, thank you Richard & co. for an excellent site.

Sorry to see that he passed away. My hope is that he is in Heaven with Jesus with all sins washed away by the precious Blood of Christ. “For we all fall short of the Glory of God.”
Mr. Gillis actually did make a grade B movie back in 1981 entitled “Night of the SS Zombies” and that movie is sort of a watch it during the Halloween season style of movie.

The legendary Mr. Gillis was a tremendously gifted actor who I think was vastly under appreciated as well as under admired. I knew him only a little but was impressed with his erudition as well as his dreamy, smooth, dulcet voice. I am sad Jamie and I shall now never get to make a picture together, we had talked about him doing a character role for one of my features. Let’s hope to see good dvd editions of MIDNIGHT HEAT and CORRUPTION asap. And who can forget WATERPOWER!?! MIDNIGHT HEAT is the real deal version of TAXI DRIVER. He’s gone from us too soon. RIP…

Jill C. Nelson says:
I am the co-author of the first and definitive biography on adult film legend, pop culture icon, John Curtis Holmes, titled, John Holmes: A Life Measured in Inches. In the winter of 2007, I interviewed Mr. Gillis for our book. My co-author, Jennifer Sugar, posted my reflections on our myspace blog last weekend:
RIP Jamie Gillis
Jamie Gillis passed away at the age of 66, from cancer, yesterday in New York City. Jill interviewed Jamie Gillis for Inches and had this to say in fond rememberance of the gifted adult actor, director and porn entrepreneur:
“Jamie Gillis was the first interview I did for “Inches”. Jennifer already had several interviews under her belt and she was quickly becoming a veteran in that regard, but in the winter of 2007, I was still a virgin so to speak, and needed to get my feet wet. One afternoon while still at work, I left a voice message at Jamie Gillis’s residence in New York, requesting a somewhat rare interview for our book. When I got home a few hours later, he had already returned my call with a very warm greeting on my answering service - accepting my request for an interview. I had only seen a couple of his film appearances and wanted to ask him specifically about working with John in Lust at First Bite (aka Dracula Sucks). (For those who aren’t familiar with it, guess who plays Dracula?) Because of his reputation on screen, it was a little surreal to hear that hypnotic and seductive voice in reply to my call. It is definitely distinct.
“When we did the interview about a week later, I found him to be an open (perhaps a little forgetful at times, particularly about some of the titles of his films and his co-stars, but who can blame him), thoughtful and charismatic person. He was extremely sensitive to our project and to John’s memory. The two actors first met in 1973 when John picked Jamie up in Los Angeles on their way to a film shoot. Jamie was immediately struck by John’s casual, easy going manner and although they were never close friends, they always respected one another. Jamie felt that John possessed a “Jimmy Stewart” quality that he appreciated and immediately liked. Jamie Gillis was not a fan of mind-altering substances and he spoke about how drugs sadly converted people into monsters, including John. He was deeply disturbed when he read about the Wonderland events and John’s connection to the homicides - that was not the John he had known. Due to his fear of flying, Jamie did not attend John’s memorial service, but he was one of the select invited guests. Upon learning of John’s illness, Jamie had suggested to some of Holmes’ other male contemporaries that it would be a thoughtful gesture to do something for John during his dying days, in the way of a visit, or otherwise. He was frustrated at the time because he couldn’t get anyone motivated to do so, but he understood that people were afraid.
“Jamie said that he’d always wanted a copy of the movie poster from the film, Marathon, that advertises Holmes and Gillis as two of the film’s sexual titans during a sequence that would become “The Battle of the Giants”. A few weeks after our interview, I found the poster online and sent it to him. He was very appreciative and sent a thank-you note. Partly as a joke in reference to being anatomically smaller than John Holmes, he signed it, “Your little Giant”. When our book was published, we sent him a copy, as we had done for most of the people we had interviewed. A few weeks later, Jamie wrote a nice note and offered a quote about our work for our website. He had expressed to me earlier that he had not been entirely happy with The Other Hollywood, so we were pleased and honoured when he praised our book and said he was very happy to be involved.
“It wouldn’t surprise me if one day the eccentricities of Jamie Gillis’s intriguing life and work are represented in a project of magnitude. He is deserving. RIP ‘Little Giant.’”

Of course Jamie Gillis was a talented actor, and he was a good director whether it was his On The Prowl films or his s/m films. He lived a fascinating life, and I would love it if Hollywood would have made a film about his life. The women he worked with loved him which is a no-brainer.I will cherish his films with love.He did write an article about me on the now-defunct website Redboard.com as the Pig From El Paso which I won’t forget,so how could I stay mad at him anyway? He brought out the bad girl in me,and he taught me to embrace my sexuality.I will remember him fondly with love and utmost respect. There was more to the man than just his persona.I am proud to have gotten to know him and love him like all his fans do.He will be greatly missed, and it will be hard to watch porn without thinking about that wonderful guy.RIP Jamie

I’ve of an age, now in my 40s, that I grew up looking for porn and finding it. I dont even look at modern US porn, cuz I dont like clean shaven all the time - its kind of ridiculous. I wont call it perverse - just blank not to have ANY hair there.
Anyway, the porn films of the 70s and 80s are documents of the time, and frequently include production innovations that were a byproduct of the time and porn itself. Certain ideas come from people being naked, even if they’re not having sex. There’s potential to make innovative porns again, but whether anyone will produce the financing necessary is another story. Still, you get what you pay for. I think an innovative high-production value porn with stunning talent, as opposed to airport hooker/runaway could do well, and its talent might become stars, even though all will have seen their genitals. Porn is an odd bird, but a reality.
Women have to be pretty savvy to not get chewed up in the industry though, and 18-22 ain’t savvy. The men are older and know what’s up. That’s the basic problem with porn. Someday, however, having been in a porno may not matter a bit to someone’s career. So much of this newest generation has been in porn that senators will have been in porn, just like weed smokers from the 60s-70s are accepted now.

I had the pleasure of being in a movie, “Pleasure Palace” with Jamie Gillis, Ron Jeremey, Eric Edwards, Serena. I, unfortunately, did not play a porno part but it was fun to do and I got to know Jamie well. We were doing the same girl for fun. Boy, and was she fun. Jamie had a very varied sex life and he was not gay. He was a blast to party with and his off screen sex life was outrageously interesting. Most men would die for one night of his experiences. I will miss this erudite and interesting gentle person who just happened to fuck women for a living.

Los Angeles gets everything late, but when I was living in New York as a kid and the porn industry was really climbing, this was one of the names on Ronald Reagan’s non-moral list (jk). He was one of the known names in porn (pornstar) and while I do not agree with his work, I knew that many of the porn stars like Jamie in the 80’s were highly educated. An Ivy Leaguer. That’s something to think about. Think. Not all in porn were (are) uneducated drug addicted drifters. RIP as he was a human being who’s walk in life was what it was.

Lone (LONG) Ranger says:
The Lone (Long) Ranger,
To All,
I knew Jamie personally! He did go to college and he was theatrically trained.
How he felt and what he actually said to me was, ” It’s very hard to get a part in regular movies, and since you have to pay rent and feed yourself and it’s so much easier for the most part to get work in porn, then that’s what I have to do to survive.”
He was telling me this in L.A. at a 24 hour Ralph’s Supermarket, on Franklin Ave and Berendo St. West Hollywood.
At the time he was living on the same block as me. He was staying there till things quieted down, from the heat of the authorities making raids and busts in San Francisco, where a lot of the porn was being produce at the time, about ‘81-‘82.
He was a nice guy, he didn’t come off as a conceited. cocky or condescending asshole like a lot of the Hollywood famous do!
The one thing that seemed very normal about him was that he did come off very straight…and this is in no way necessarily trying to make anyone on this blog right or wrong in their viewpoints about Jamie!
Notwithstanding, one day I went over to talk to him, where he was staying with these two other porn stars (both females).
As I approached the door, I caught a glimpse of a something moving, since the curtain was ajar enough to see into the room.
As I was about to knock on the door, I had to steady myself, realizing it was a bedroom I was actually perceiving as my eyes focused on the image.
I was quite shocked and dismayed, I just stood there with my mouth hanging open as to what I was witnessing!
Was I just hallucinating or imagining this, like seeing a mirage in the desert?!
You can just imagine the disbelief of the whole thing!
What terrible timing, but then again it could have been great timing if what greeted my eyes had been both of his roommates or at least one of them, as they were both fairly hot, but instead….
It was Jamie himself…..I stood there frozen in time, as I never in my wildest imagination wanted to or expected to see such a thing, completely in shock and horror!....there, with his legs pulled back and at the same time he was shoving a big green rubbery vibrating, (you can tell as it was turning round and round) fucking DILDO, deeply in and out his asshole! Then he started to ejaculate all over himself!!!!
This all took place in just seconds, yet it seemed like an eternity.
I got sick to my stomach and almost threw up. I immediately left feeling very disgusted seeing such a perverse act!
Obviously, he not only played bizarre roles in porn or any other type of movie but was bizarre in real life also.
Needless to say, I went home very quickly and never spoke to him after that. That’s not the type of friend I prefer.
Though I didn’t hold it against him that he liked doing that but in my mind it definitely is wrong. He was a guy not a women, and guys are not suppose to take it up the ass! I don’t care how good it might feel!
Jamie, may you RIP and your asshole get some relief in heaven!
LONG.

BURYING JAMIE (Part 1 of 3)
Sunday, November 7th, 2010
I waited more than six months before putting online this denunciation of many of the people who were, at one time, my peer group. Both morally and intellectually, I have retreated not an inch from the anger, sadness, profound alienation and gloomy self-awareness which motivated me to employ the written word as catharsis and metamorphosis in this instance. For, I was miserable when I learned Jamie Gillis had been honored, and beyond: my eyes opened. That world of porn really, really was worse than I had ever thought after all, and I was in denial of it for thirty years.
Speaking as a former minor pornographic film star who made about 20 movies in 1980-1981, I was shocked and disgusted to learn that Annie Sprinkle, whom I considered a friendly acquaintance, had held a “wake” for the late Jamie Gillis (who died of cancer recently). I was more shocked and disgusted that 50 people attended.
I worked at the old Melody Burlesk from 1980 to 1985, and like all the other stripper/lap dancers working there, hung out at the bar named Bernard’s directly across the street which had the same owners. The strippers found safe haven there, the porn directors whose offices were nearby on Broadway went there to talk business, and the porn stars—male and female—went there to drink and socialize in an atmosphere considered friendly to the X-rated world. In part, the male porn stars went to Bernard’s to try to capitalize on their adult entertainment celebrity and pick up the strippers. Harry Reems was a gentleman, Ron Jeremy was a mensch, Ron Hudd was kind of cool and detached from the point of view of personality but certainly wasn’t dangerous, and though I didn’t care for Paul Thomas’ egotism, he was kind to me on our one night stand. David Morris and I were onstage lovers.
But, all of us knew never to go with Jamie Gillis, whose reputation preceded him; everyone had heard that he was cruel and violent, and liked to lure, then hit, hurt, and humiliate. Only the youngest and most naïve newcomers went off to have private encounters with Jamie, which turned hellish.
To tell the ugly stories I heard about Jamie would be hearsay, and besides, he can’t defend himself (so I won’t tell them). But, the fact that he was sadistic was not exactly a state secret; he practiced not only consensual sadomasochism —as with his partner Serena—but nonconsensual sadism. In a (quote) normal (end quote) S&M relationship, the person playing the bottom has ways of signaling the person playing the top that he (or she) is going too far, and then, it’s the top’s turn to subtly obey, by slowing down. I saw Jamie stop forcing a dildo onto the sides of Serena’s mouth in a movie when her eyes, and also a gentle touch of her hand, informed him that she’d reached the limit of pain she wanted to feel. But, in the movie “900 Fantasy Lane,” in the dungeon scene at the end, a young actress’ face fills the entire screen as she exits, for she has a bruise on her cheek, and she yells at Jamie: “You goddamn bastard!” (No signals honored then.) The insult is real, and wasn’t in the script, and the film editor left it in, just as the director had let the scene proceed. (At least, her physical abuse is documented.) Jamie apparently beat her way beyond the limit of what she thought she was getting paid for.

BURYING JAMIE (Part 2 of 3)
Sunday, November 7th, 2010
Sometimes (but certainly, certainly not all the time) Catherine MacKinnon is right: porn is violence against women, and not after the fact when we debate what effect certain scenes might have on a mentally unstable person in the audience. On very rare occasions, what’s being filmed is an assault in progress.
I thought Annie Sprinkle was a free speech advocate, a voice in the fight against breast cancer, and an environmentalist. Why had she no respect for that actresses’ experience? Was she, when she honored Jamie with a wake, in denial of whom and just what Jamie was? How could she be in denial when she’s been in the X-rated business since she was eighteen? More confounding and disturbing: how could 50 people be in denial of what a shameless, violent woman-hater Jamie was? I have to admit that past a certain point, I myself was a bit corrupted by that cultural milieu, and said some ugly lines in movies I didn’t want to say, and began accepting too much disrespectfulness from directors, managers and customers alike. But, I soon realized that my personality was degenerating and exited that world. So, is it possible that familiarity, over a very long period of time, with an individual who is obviously corrupt, deprives people of the perspective which would be needed to see a bad person as they are? (We may get used to substandard ethical behavior in ourselves; we may get used to bad people outside of ourselves at the same time.)
I learned something from the expert on torture named Darius Rejali recently interviewed on NPR. When a professional in a different walk of life, that is, a journalist, physician, lawyer or politician, witnesses official military personnel practicing torture, why does he or she so rarely take action? One: the sense that he, the witness, is already implicated. Two: peer pressure (a complicity of silence involving everyone there). Three: confusion in the mind of the witness as to whether the person being tortured is really a terrorist (so then, is the torture justified?) or not.
In terms of the porn world, the first two conditions outlined above are sufficient to explain why so many fellow porn stars, directors and film crews in the X-rated world took Jamie’s sadism lightly, and as for the third, some of us suffered honest confusion also—as to whether Jamie was practicing consensual S&M or non-consensual violence (read—whether he was a terrorist or not, but he was). “Why do they not notice the elephant in the room?” Rejali provocatively asks, saying: “it’s the situation, not the disposition, that [may make] us evil.” So, people in the porn world who thought of themselves as quite conscientious could have ignored Jamie’s cruelty. Most people cave in, Rejali notes, but not all.
For veterans of porn, the X-rated world is a Rashomon tale, with some of us looking back with shame and bitterness, others with joy and smiles—like me. Only what is devastating to me about a well-attended wake for Jamie Gillis is that the event tends to validate Catherine Mackinnon’s proposition that the purpose of the porn industry is to subordinate, beat, force and harm female human beings. After all, R. Crumb made pictures of women having their breasts bitten like cheeseburgers and having their thighs carved with knives, only he didn’t do it, he drew it. Jamie really did threaten, subordinate, force, beat, and harm. Did nobody at that ghastly wake remember or care?
Thankfully, some of us porn veterans have a very different ethos than Jamie Gillis. Some of us think the purpose of porn is to provide sexual companionship for lonely people, to provide a direct route to biological gratification through explicit images (not necessarily degrading ones) for those who need some help, to assist couples bored by the commonplaces of their lives together by providing needed sexual stimulation through fantasy material, and, not least, to provide us porn stars with good memories.

I should like Catherine Mackinnon et al to know: only once was I hurt and degraded in the making of a porn movie; I enjoy remembering almost all the other scenes.
Indeed, most of the time when I was in the X-rated world, I was neither being harmed nor in denial (that is, of my own experience), but wide awake and quite myself—for example, the night in Bernard’s when Jamie Gillis slammed the full weight of his body up against my back and ass as I stood at the bar having a drink, saying: “I heard this was a good place to pick up girls!”
Man, what an intelligent opener, Jamie. You know, I always knew you were a thinker, an original and a Renaissance man.
“Get away from me,” I said reflexively (and he did). I considered his come-on pathetic, I found his sadism disgusting, and I also thought he was hideous, for after all, beauty is as beauty does.
Jamie, I always thought you were a worm, and I’m glad worms are consuming you now. So far as I’m concerned, you probably should have died much sooner, and I know I’m far from alone in thinking so. I hope some testimonials from the numerous sexual partners Jamie Gillis falsely imprisoned and actually injured over the course of many years have the courage to come forward, but being taken advantage of can provoke shame, and the fear of being ridiculed. That has to stop—Right on, Sister.
And Annie Sprinkle, since you honored the predatory emblem of pornography’s Fascist wing, I no longer believe you stand for anything worth considering.

Why is Lisa Be spamming this shitpost all over the fucking internet right now? Great timing, really. I hope some of these ‘victims’ come forward too because I believe approximately zero of what you write above.
Also, some guy bumping into you in a bar does not equal molestation, nor was his ‘pickup line’ which very well could have been a goofy, drunk query offensive in any way.
Please go back to your women’s studies 101 classes and read up on the kyriarchy some more so that we can enjoy the sight of you self-flagellating and raging about your past in the porn industry. You are a sad woman who clearly has ~feelings about all this, but nevertheless, I’ll still take Annie Sprinkle’s word before I’ll take yours. Speaking ill of the dead is as low class as it gets.
By the way, Jamie was cremated, so no, the worms aren’t getting him.

I am not going to waste a lot of time trying to defend a dead man. All I will say is that I knew Jamie for over 30 years and I can count on one hand the people who have bad things to say about him and still have a digit to hold up to Ms. Be. Jamie was one of a kind, raw and sexual and totally switchable. I once said there were 5 kinds of people in the porn industry, Hetrosexuals,Homosexuals, Bi-sexuals, Tri-sexuals and Jamie Gullis. I meant it as a complement and he took it as such and often quoted me. Yes Jamie pushed the dominant envelope but would do a 180 degree turn faster than you could see with the human eye if a woman showed any spark of disapproval in his actions. I couldn’t attend Jamie’s memorial but I was there in spirit and will take my 30 years of experience with the man over Lisa Be page full of hearsay and character assassination. I still morn him and miss him. Carter Stevens
