Larry Young’s amazing “Lawrence Of Newark” album (1973)

Prepare to be absolutely floored by the unorthodox sounds of jazz organist Larry Young. I first heard Young’s playing on a bootleg of him jamming in the studio with Jimi Hendrix. If you can hold your own with Jimi, you’ve got to have CHOPS and Young—sometimes called the “Coltrane of the organ”—had chops to spare. What sent me out (er…. to Google) to find this, though, was a reference in a Nick Cave interview where he was saying how he and the musicians in the Grinderman project had been grooving in the studio on Young’s monster of a song “Khadid of Space, Pt. 2 Welcome.” With a title like that—and knowing that Pharoah Sanders was all over this album—I just had to hear it. It did not disappoint. It’s a massive HUNK of music. Funky, psychedelic, both droning and jazzy simultaneously, it’s nothing shot of exhilarating and stunning. Look at the album cover. I’m a sucker for anything that even faintly reeks of Sun Ra-style Afro-Futurism and if you, too, are so inclined, you can thank me in the comments section.

This is a really great listen, I haven’t heard it in years. I once worked at a radio station and would randomly pull albums based on what they looked like, this was one that I pulled several times.

I use to To Newark NJ to a couple different Jazz Clubs back in the day to watch Larry and all the young cats looking to groove I have seen him with Woody Shaw, Grant Green, Joe Henderson, Sam Rivers..to name a few notables. Larry held tight to Newark creating open sessions after hours at many clubs I being a guitarist just loved to get some Larry time, until dawn after a hell of show..always
he loved to develop new talent and the bigger the jam the bigger the smiles.. that cat could do all R&B, Soul/Jazz, Acid/Jazz and Bop till we dropped..boy oh boy the good old days sure were sweet…
oh found this on Google, your site pretty [0oL

Richard - now that you’ve digested LoN, find the recently released 2xLP called Love Cry Want [both the name of the band and the record]. Recorded live in 1972, finally released on CD c.late-90s and just last year for the first time on vinyl. Featuring Young and the singularly-named Nicholas - who invented, and plays here the prototype of the first guitar-synthesizer - it’s a seriously freaky, out, throbbing, and hairy jazz/rock thrill ride. It was recorded outside the White House and legend has it that Nixon ordered Haldeman to shut it down as it was feared they would levitate the White House. When you hear it, you’ll know why. Just find it.
