Rare footage of the late, great Lester Bangs ripping on Bryan Ferry, Emerson Lake and Palmer and calling for new something new musically in the mid-70s. Must be out-takes from All You Need Is Love documentary.

That’s pretty funny.
Yep, you’re right:

Bangs was at least right about Roxy Music—they had an influence, but punk made them look a bit silly. And I defy you to show me a Roxy Music fan under the age of 30….
i never heard of this guy but i’m in love with him!
What’s truly sad is that ELP now sounds like the most raw and human thing imaginable next to most current popular music.
It’s just as well that poor Lester never lived to see it.
And Bryan Ferry is the most interesting “superstar” in the world for the same reason. LB really comes off like a rockist bore with poor
forecasting skills here.
Re: Brad Laner’s comments
Sorry, but you are about as wrong as you could be. Roxy Music were great until soon after Eno left. Bangs was right to appreciate their early stuff and was also right about Ferry’s decline into empty lounge-lizard posturing. And ELP? Raw and human? Well, these things are always subjective I guess, but to me and my generation (ie 16 in 1977) he absolutely nails why punk was such a breath of life. He’s also right about waiting for the next saviour - Johnny Rotten was just a couple of years later than expected…
martin,
you miss my point completely.
thanks, brad
