Ultra Fabulous, Beyond Drag: A ‘transploitation’ film fest

Some of L.A.‘s fiercest painted ladies will be appearing in person and on screen at the Ultra Fabulous, Beyond Drag event produced by Austin Young and Saskia Wilson-Brown.

Here’s what the organizers have to say:

International in scope, “Ultra Fabulous, Beyond Drag: Part Deux” is a a celebration of gender identification—featuring androgynes, the transgendered, drag queens and tranimals… Going way beyond the boas, glitter and whip-smart sass, it aims to showcase a new filmic genre ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äù a genre we are dubbing “transploitation” ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äù born of and predicated on the instant accessibility of internet culture, the do-it-yourself ethos of home publishing, and the humorous narcissism inherent to self-reflection, gender identification and “otherness.” All this, through the best new performance video and short film work by established filmmakers, avant-garde performers, iconic chanteuses, Gen Y viral superstars, and developing talents alike. Oh, and a lot of make-up.

The screening takes place Dec. 2 at L.A.‘s Downtown Independent and features new work by Mathu Andersen & Andrew Schneider, Jer Ber Jones, Lipstique, Buck Angel, Calpernia Addams, Jackie Beat, RuPaul, Boom Boom, Squeaky Blonde, Zackary Drucker, Candis Cayne, Chris Crocker, Austin Young, Taylor Mac, Willam Belli and more.

Making the scene that night will be Buck Angel, Calpernia Addams and Zackary Drucker, speaking on a panel moderated by Jackie Beat. You can purchase tickets here.

Prior to the film festival, Fade-Dra and Squeaky Blonde will teach a Monday night workshop at Machine Project on how to apply “tranimal” makeup, and Conan O’Brien’s costumer Scott Cronick will be teaching quick costume tricks (and offering advice on how to “tuck”). Not your typical makeup lesson! Austin Young will be on hand taking the before-and-after shots.

Revolt in the Fifth Dimension is a 1967 episode of the old Spiderman cartoon which was directed by a then 25-year old Ralph Bakshi. For reasons no longer recalled, this was the only episode of the series that NBC chose not to air again, although it lived on in syndication for years afterward. The probable reason they didn’t retransmit this episode is how druggy it seems! (Not that the death theme and flying sperm weren’t enough!) This has to be the most wigged out episode of any cartoon series, ever, or at least until the advent of Adult Swim. I recall every second of it, especially the music.

Here’s Revolt in the Fifth Dimension:

Part II is here. Dangerous Minds pal Calpernia Addams is also a fan of Revolt. Here she gives it a fun MST3K treatment.
