Red Vines

Endlessly creative artist collage/mosaic artist Jason Mecier’s new exhibit “Licorice Flix, Edible Movie Mosaics” also features portraits of Harry Potter, Willy Wonka, ET, Elizabeth Berkley in Show Girls and Freddy Krueger rendered in Red Vines®. As usual, they’re pretty amazing.

Appropriately, there is a portrait of Charlie Chaplin included. It’s a little-known fact that the shoe the Little Tramp boils and eats in The Gold Rush was made of licorice by the American Licorice Company, the same company who make Red Vines® (and who are sponsoring the art show).

The show is opening at the IAm8Bit Gallery at 2147 W. Sunset Blvd. in Los Angeles, with a reception for the artist on November 4 from 7-10 PM.

Download ‘Twin Peaks Escape From Black Lodge’ video game for free

For all you die-hard Twin Peaks and retro game lovers out there, Jak Locke created this free Black Lodge Atari 2600-style action game for PCs and Macs. According to all the comments I’ve been reading about this game, it’s damn hard to beat:

A day in the FBI was never like this before! You are Special Agent Dale Cooper and you’ve found yourself trapped inside of the Black Lodge, a surreal and dangerous place between worlds.

Try as you might, you can’t seem to find anything but the same room and hallway no matter which way you turn. Worse yet, your doppelganger is in hot pursuit! You have no choice but to keep running through the room and hallway (or is it more than one?) and above all else, don’t let your doppelganger touch you! Your extensive physical training in the FBI will provide you a seemingly limitless supply of energy to run as long as necessary, but running out of breath is the least of your worries!

You’ll find quickly that you’re not alone in the Black Lodge, though your friends are few and far between. Not only that, the lodge itself seems to be actively trying to trip you up at all times! You’ll be dodging chairs and crazed Lodge residents all while trying to keep your own insanity. How long can this go on?

No time to think of that now -here comes that doppelganger again. Just keep on running through the curtains or it will surely be curtains for you!

Go here and scroll to the bottom to download the game for your PC or Mac.

“Diane…” the Twin Peaks tapes of Agent Cooper

Here’s a fantastic artifact of one of the best shows ever to grace broadcast TV that I remember seeing back in the day but for some reason never picked up. Being ostensibly the tapes we saw Agent Cooper constantly making for his unseen assistant, Diane, quite a bit of this seems to have been created just for this release while other sections could have been lifted straight from the show. In any case it’s a big bundle of vintage and lesser-known Lynch-ian goodness. Below is most of the cassette in Youtube form. Follow the link at the bottom to get the entire thing.

How did David Lynch and Mark Frost capitalize on the zeitgeisty momentum sparked by Twin Peaks?  With 1992’s On The Air, an unlikely mash-up of, well, Happy Days and 30 Rock.  From its Wiki entry: “The program followed the antics of the staff of a fictional 1950s television network (Zoblotnick Broadcasting Company or ZBC), as they tried to put on a live variety program called ‘The Lester Guy Show’ with disastrous results.”

I loved it.  America did not.  ABC took On The Air off the air after airing only 3 of its 7 filmed episodes.  Why not decide for yourself, and watch some of it below?  If you like what you see, you can, for now, find a whole lot more of it here.
